What is a screening interview?

A screening interview is a part of the job selection process that businesses use to determine whether a candidate has the qualities required for the job that the company is hiring. Even during hiring process, it is usually the initial interview. Typically, the recruiter will use this opportunity to: define the company and position they’re hiring for; ask questions to determine whether the candidate meets the basic requirements for the role, whether the position matches what the candidate is looking for, and whether the candidate is interested in pursuing the role. Respond to any concerns the applicant has about the organisation, role, or hiring process. The screening interview can be done in person or over the phone. In either scenario, the screening interview determines whether you advance to the next stage of the interview process.

Why employers ask ‘Tell me about yourself’
‘Tell me about yourself’ inquiries are a frequent way to ease both you and the interviewer into the conversation. It allows the interviewer to hear a summary of your background and talents, allowing them to understand what experience and qualifications you believe are most relevant to the job you’re interviewing for. Employers are also aware that, while being a regular interview topic, it nevertheless tends to fluster or stump candidates. By answering this correctly, you establish yourself as someone who is confident, calm under pressure, and aware of the job’s requirements. Some interviewers may use your response to this question as an icebreaker, sparking casual conversation to get to know you better. Others, on the other hand, may proceed directly to subsequent interview
questions after you respond.

Variations of ‘Tell me about yourself’
Interviewers may phrase the question "Tell me about yourself" in a variety of ways, such as: I have your resume in front of me, but tell me more about yourself. Please go over your resume with me. I’d like to learn more about your experience. Please tell me a little bit about your background. Describe your personality. Tell me about yourself that isn’t on your CV.
